You have been preparing for months. Your posing is flawless, and your physical condition is at its peak. However, when you step onto the international stage, you enter a technical system where strategy and regulations dictate the final outcome. Understanding this mechanism is vital to knowing what to expect in each phase of the championship.

1. Competition Rounds and Athlete Numbers

In the IFBB, the competition flow depends on the number of participants, although the Chief Judge always has the final word based on the event's circumstances:

  • More than 15 athletes: An Elimination Round is held. Judges select their 15 favorites using an "X". If there are ties at the 15th spot, those athletes also advance to the next round, so semifinals could have more than 15 competitors. Athletes eliminated here appear without points on the final lists.
  • 8 to 15 athletes: The competition usually starts directly with the Semifinal Round, where all athletes are scored to select the Top 6. However, depending on the event, the organization might decide to reduce the group (e.g., to a Top 10) before the finals.
  • 7 athletes or fewer: The competition goes directly to the Final Round. There are no semifinals; athletes go straight to the final judging that will decide the podium placements.

🚨 A Fresh Start in the Finals

Upon reaching the final round (Top 6), all athletes start with 0 points. The finals are judged with a "fresh perspective." This means that whatever happened in previous rounds is discarded, and every finalist has the opportunity to fight for the gold starting from scratch.

2. How Judges Score

It is a common mistake to think that judges give random numerical marks. In reality, judges assign an individual ranking position to each athlete.

If a judge considers you the best in the line-up, they award you 1 point (1st place). If they think you are second, you get 2 points, and so on. For this reason, the athlete with the lowest total score is the winner.

The Discard Rule and the Odd-Numbered Panel

To ensure impartiality, the judging panel is always an odd number (5, 7, or 9 judges). This prevents deadlocks in decisions. To calculate the final score for each athlete:

  1. The highest score (the worst position received) is discarded.
  2. The lowest score (the best position received) is discarded.
  3. The remaining scores from the central judges are added together.

🔍 "Blind" Competition

As an athlete, you compete without knowing your score in real-time. The callouts (comparisons) and rotations directed by the Chief Judge are your only visual cues, but the actual result is only revealed at the end. This uncertainty forces you to maintain maximum tension and elegance until the very last second.

3. How are Tie-breaks Resolved?

Despite the odd-numbered panel, it is possible for two athletes to end up with the same total score on their final card. In this case, the Relative Placement Method is applied.

The system reviews the individual sheets of all judges and compares the two tied athletes head-to-head. If the majority of the individual judges preferred Athlete A over Athlete B in their individual assessment, the tie is broken in favor of the former. It is a direct judge-to-judge comparison that always yields a winner.

My expert advice: Some athletes make the mistake of turning to one side or the other, trying to ensure every judge can see their pose clearly. This is a mistake. You never know exactly when a judge is looking at you, so pose straight ahead and stay still. Let the judges find you in your best pose, not oriented toward one side of the judging panel or the other.

4. Controlling the "Total Package"

Controlling every detail is fundamental to improving the Total Package result. We must keep in mind that all athletes arrive with the best physique possible, and the higher the level of the competition, the more small details count in deciding who takes the victory.

  • Elegance and Presence: Your attitude during rotations must be flawless.
  • Maintaining Condition: The physique must look just as tight from the first comparison until the very last second.
  • Overall Aesthetics: Bikini or trunks fit, hair, makeup, and tan must create a professional and harmonious image.
